Course Description:
Understanding and appreciating the importance of one’s job is critical to a successful work experience. The Direct Support Professional is at the foundation of the service delivery system, carrying out the mission of the Agency or organization, supporting individuals, and their families. The purpose of this module is to provide an introduction to the various diagnoses which bring patients to acute rehab, skilled nursing, adult living facility, or home health care such as stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, as well as an overview of the standards of professionalism.
Course Objective:
  • Define the role of the Direct Support Professional in supporting individuals.
  • Describe self-determination and its importance in living a quality life.
  • Identify specific professional expectations related to each of the following areas: appearance, confidentiality, driving, reporting information, respect, work habits, social skills, and boundaries.
  • Explain the importance of appreciating diversity on the team and in the work setting.
  • Describe the impact culture has on communication.
